Female Hair Loss
Female hair loss can be devastating, brought on usually by hormonal changes. However, help is at hand at the Hair and Skin Centre.

Within the follicles affected by female pattern hair loss there is biologically active testosterone.
An enzyme that occurs naturally in your body known as 5 alpha-reductase converts
this testosterone into another more potent hormone known as dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
DHT reduces the growth phase resulting in the gradual process of finer, weaker hairs, as the
follicle continues to shrink. Eventually these hair follicles die, resulting in irreversible baldness.
Hairs become brittle, lighter in color, and fall out at a much faster rate than normal. Studies
now show that inhibiting 5-alpha-reductase is the key to preventing this type of hair loss.
